A study published in JAMA found that patients prescribed semaglutide—an ingredient in many popular weight loss and diabetes medications—may face a significantly increased risk of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION).
NAION is a serious and rare eye condition that can cause irreversible vision loss, often without prior symptoms—including sudden blindness.
Symptoms to Watch For
You may wake up one day with:
- A blind spot
- Blurry edges in your vision
- Dimness—as if someone turned down the lights in one or both eyes
Other possible signs of NAION include:
- A dim or dark circle over part of your vision
- Visual fog or a “graying out” effect
- Trouble seeing in low light
- Reduced sharpness or clarity
- Pressure or discomfort around one or both eyes

Recent Studies Linking Semaglutide to Vision Issues
