Did you know that you can get kidney cancer from drinking water in the United States—whether it’s public drinking water or water from a well?
I’m Attorney Tracy Paulsen with Rightful Legal, and today I wanted to give you an update on a major crisis affecting 70% of drinking water communities in the United States. This also affects people worldwide, as every human being on Earth is expected to have some level of PFAS in their bodies. 3M is the primary manufacturer of PFAS chemical compounds.
What PFAS Are and Where They Come From
These compounds are used for things such as firefighting foam. They’re used as industrial solvents, fire retardants, and are also found in household products like dental floss. They’re present in water-resistant products such as Gore-Tex clothing. But the most primary place that human beings are exposed is through public drinking water.
Lawsuit Details: MDL Against 3M in Federal Court
Currently, there is a lawsuit in the MDL—which stands for multidistrict litigation. This is under a federal judge in the federal court of South Carolina. The case is moving very quickly. The first cases, called bellwether trials, are expected to be heard in October of 2025.
The judge has also noted that many of the kidney cancer cases may get settled prior to these trials.
