Transcript
Introduction
Good afternoon, Tracy Paulson, founder of Rightful Legal, a Massachusetts-based personal injury firm. Today, I would like to talk about PFAS — a group of forever chemicals that you may have seen in the news lately.
What Are PFAS?
PFAS are primarily used as fire retardants and are found in consumer products such as cookware and textiles. They can also be found in drinking water. Massachusetts has some of the highest levels of PFAS in the entire nation.
PFAS Contamination in Hyannis
Cities like Hyannis have some of the highest levels of PFAS in the entire nation. Hyannis in particular, had high levels concentration of PFAS, as a result of a firefighting training camp where PFAS was introduced into the aquifer and also as a result from the municipal airport in Barnstable. They have done a lot since 2016 to try to rectify the drinking water situation. However there is still a lot of exposure there.
Health Risks of PFAS
A recent study is being conducted to understand how PFAS affects human health and the environment, specifically among citizens of Hyannis. The National Academy of Sciences found that individuals with more than 20 nanograms per milliliter of PFAS in their bloodstream are at the highest risk levels for exposure in negative adverse health effects.
You should be screened for:
- Thyroid issues
- High cholesterol
- Most importantly: testicular cancer, kidney cancer, and ulcerative colitis
How to Protect Yourself
If you’re concerned about PFAS exposure, here are a few steps you can take:
- Get your water tested through one of the approved laboratories listed on the Massachusetts DEP website.
- Get your blood tested by an approved laboratory.
- Install a water filtration system (especially important if you have a private well).
- Use a handheld water filtration system, but make sure it specifically targets PFAS reduction.
