Introduction & Why This Matters
Good afternoon. I’m Tracy Paulsen from Rightful Legal. Today, it’s pretty chilly out. I’m standing in my hometown in Massachusetts, in front of a pond here—it’s very beautiful. I’m standing here for a reason. I’ve been talking a lot about PFAS contamination in our drinking water systems.
What Are PFAS (Forever Chemicals)?
The town that I live in actually has very high PFAS numbers, and I’ve talked to a lot of people who have been injured and are suffering serious, life-threatening injuries as a result. PFAS are forever chemicals. They’re found in many consumer products, as I’ve stated before, but our drinking water is really the number one way that human beings are exposed. There is no amount of PFAS that is safe for human exposure.
Health Risks & Life-Threatening Illnesses
These chemicals can lead to life-threatening illnesses such as kidney cancer, testicular cancer, liver cancer, thyroid cancer, and ulcerative colitis—a whole host of them. Right now, there is a lawsuit pending against the manufacturers, including DuPont and 3M, many of whom knew about the dangers of these chemicals a very long time ago.
Legal Action Against Manufacturers – Time Is Limited
Opportunities for these types of lawsuits are actually very short. You have to remember that there’s a statute of limitations. It varies from person to person and state to state, but generally, these are time-barred. There is a lawsuit currently happening in the MDL, and it’s most likely going to settle sooner rather than later. Time is running out. These companies don’t want people to find out about it, and they don’t want to pay.
Why I’m Speaking Out – Awareness & Advocacy
Why am I talking about this? One, to promote awareness. If you have suffered, it’s near and dear to my heart that you deserve to be compensated for the wrongdoing of others. Secondly, I’m an attorney—and attorneys want to help and promote change, especially in the areas of human health and the environment. It’s something that I’m incredibly passionate about and have worked on my entire life and career.
PFAS in Drinking Water – The Silent Danger
I’m trying to help people and change the system. We can do that in this country through tort law by holding the polluting companies responsible and liable for the harm that they’ve created—hopefully, so they won’t do it again in the future. It can act as a deterrent.
