Introduction: EPA’s Dangerous New Move
Did you know that the current administration made a bold move today—rolling back protections for American citizens and denying us access to clean water, all to protect the profits of chemical companies?
Hello, I’m Attorney Tracy Paulsen from Rightful Legal in Massachusetts.
I have an urgent and grim update concerning the safety of our drinking water and the well-being of our communities.
What Are PFAS (“Forever Chemicals”)?
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced plans to roll back critical regulations on PFAS chemicals, commonly known as “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in the environment or the human body.
These substances are linked to:
- Life-threatening cancers
- Immune system disorders
- Developmental problems in children
- High blood pressure and cholesterol
- Many other serious health consequences
New Regulation Rollbacks Explained
Until now, cities and towns were required to measure six PFAS chemicals in our public drinking water supply. Keep in mind—there are more than 12,000 synthetic PFAS chemicals being used today.
Under the EPA’s new rules, towns will now only need to regulate two of the most common PFAS compounds:
- PFOA
- PFOS
The EPA plans to rescind limits on newer but still harmful variants such as:
- GenX
- PFHxS
- PFBS
- PFNA
This means towns and cities no longer have to filter or even monitor these contaminants in your water.
How This Affects Your Drinking Water
This decision is a huge step backward in our fight to protect public health and the environment.
- PFAS contamination has already been detected in nearly half of U.S. water supplies.
- People are getting sick and dying from drinking water they believed was safe.
Weakening these protections prioritizes chemical industry profits over human lives.
Who’s at Highest Risk?
This rollback will disproportionately harm people in:
- Communities near industrial sites
- Areas close to military bases, where PFAS pollution is most severe
It also places the financial burden of filtering these chemicals onto consumers, who:
- Are already forced to buy bottled water
- May spend $8,000 or more on home filtration systems
- Must then cover ongoing maintenance costs
Why the Rollback Benefits Big Chemical Companies
This move comes after a $14 billion class-action settlement involving 3M and DuPont—funds that were supposed to clean up PFAS pollution.
Now, despite that payout, towns are no longer required to do the cleanup—while the companies have already paid and walked away.
At Rightful Legal, we see this as a dismal day for American citizens and a huge win for large chemical corporations. Where profits are considered more important thank humans lives.
