Introduction
Good afternoon, Tracy Paulson, founder of Rightful Legal, a Massachusetts-based personal injury firm. Today, I wanted to talk about PFAS and what you can do to keep yourself safe at home.
What Are PFAS?
PFAS are forever chemicals — a group of man-made chemicals found in a host of consumer goods, including cosmetics, nonstick cookware, makeup, dental floss, and contact lenses. They are also found in drinking water and come from various sources such as firefighting foam and industrial processes near airports. PFAS can leak into the aquifer and are found all over the United States, with high levels here in Massachusetts.
Health Risks of PFAS
Ingestion of PFAS can bioaccumulate over time in your bloodstream and lead to serious health risks. These include fertility issues, low birth weight, high cholesterol, thyroid problems, and various types of cancer.
How to Protect Your Drinking Water at Home
The most effective way to remove PFAS from your water is reverse osmosis — a water filter installed under your sink or for your whole house. While these systems can be expensive, they are likely worth the investment.
Today I wanted to talk about A less expensive and very affordable alternative is handheld water filtration systems. For example, Brita filters remove about 80% of PFAS from drinking water. There are other products known to remove about 95% of PFAS while also removing pesticides and other contaminants like lead.
I’m not big on product placement but I did want to talk about this particular product that does check all of those boxers. It’s very inexpensive, about $35 and is available on Amazon. It’s called the ZeroWater filter. I just wanted to show this to you because it’s economical. You are hearing about it in the news too. It makes sense to purchase one of these if you can.
